Alexa Schnieders at the "Hovde House"

From:  Illinois, USA

"In just a few short weeks, I will wrap up my final semester at Loyola University Chicago. It has been a very full and challenging season of seeking God and discovering how to use my gifts for His glory. Now, after a number of human rights internships and volunteer experiences, I have the opportunity to walk side-by-side with survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence in Peru with Asociación Paz y Esperanza (Peace and Hope International).

In Huánuco, I will serve alongside the other staff as a tutor and house-mom, as well as a support for the residents’ comprehensive therapy. I will likely be leading workshops on subjects such as self-esteem, life plans, and prevention of further abuse. Most importantly, I foresee serving in the ministry of presence – offering encouragement, stability, and love to the clients and staff as I live in the house with them."

"We're so blessed that God continues to show us his heart for the marginalized. Through the Andemos program, Paz y Esperanza has provided an opportunity where our passions as a couple and the world's great needs can come together. We'll be spending 5 months in Huánuco, Perú working in the Casa del Buen Trato Hovde. This shelter is home to children and women who have suffered great abuse. Our project is to develop a business plan for the organization's eco-farm that could potentially be a sustainable local source of funding for the shelter. We believe wholeheartedly in the work of Paz y Esperanza and their holistic Gospel-centered approach to defending and restoring the most vulnerable. We're excited to come alongside them in the area of sustainability and do our part to ensure that the freedom these women have come to know in the shelter is sustainable for years to come."
